Fabian Picardo said that he had been threatened over the social networking site due to his criticism of the Spanish government’s actions in the fiasco concerning Gibraltar.
Mr Picardo said: “I think social media is a great thing, but it also has a very negative aspect to it, which is people can use the cloak of anonymity to insult people and to say things that reasonable human beings don't say about each other.
Mrs Girling’s South West England constituency includes Gibraltar and she said she was called a ‘Nazi’ and a ‘f***ing b***h’ by Spanish Twitter trolls after suggesting Brits boycott Spain when planning their summer holidays.
Mr Picardo added: “I have had some extreme reactions to things I say.
