Snow-go air chaos hits US
THE US east coast was struggling to return to normal yesterday after snow storms across nine states paralysed transport networks.
Diggers were sent in to clear runways at many of the busiest airports. Thousands were forced to sleep in terminals as 7,000 flights were cancelled over Christmas.
Among the worst hit airports were Newark in New Jersey, JFK and Laguardia, both in New York. They had to cope with 4,500 cancelled flights. Yesterday airports began reopening to limited landings but it will take some time to clear the huge backlog.
One airline spokesman said: “Any airline scheduler will tell you it’s like playing with a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces keep changing shape.”
