The Centovalli Express is a Swiss rail line which takes passengers from the town of Locarno to the city of Domodossola in Northern Italy.

The 52km journey takes around 2 hours, crossing 83 bridges and going through 34 tunnels. As well as taking in the beautiful scenery of cliffside views, hillside vineyards, chestnut forests and mountains that are snow-capped in the winter.

The 100-year-old line also passes the Lsorno Viaduct, which is the site of Switzerland’s first bungee jump.

Locarno is home to most of the cultural and recreational activities in its district. The Swiss town has a near-Mediterranean setting, palm trees and sees 2,300 hours of sunshine a year making it a beautiful destination for those who want to relax.

The town is also known for its International Film Festival, which started during the aftermath of the Second World War. The event, which takes place every August, offers a stage for talents across the world, showcasing avant-garde and innovative forms of films.

The Centovalli Express line’s last stop offers quite a different feel to Locarno. Domodossola is a small city with a population of around 18,000. It is a focal point for the surrounding valleys and an important railway junction between Italy and Switzerland.

The city has a long history and gives a village feel with buildings that date back to the late Middle Ages and a “medieval” town centre. It is most famous for the Sacro Monte Calvario, a Roman Catholic sanctuary that has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Civic Museum of the Simplon is a celebration of the link between the two countries through the illustration of the Simplon Tunnel, which connects Switzerland to Italy. The museum tells the story of the construction of the tunnel and even displays rocks collected during the excavation works.

Despite this being completely different, there is a deep connection, making the journey one with beautiful views but with great history attached to it.

The train runs daily in both directions, and a ticket costs just under £17, and children under the age of six travel for free.
