Russia on fire as multiple 'explosions' rip through huge St Petersburg market

A massive fire has erupted at one of the largest markets in St. Petersburg, Russia, with reports of multiple explosions ripping through the site. Dramatic video shared on social media shows the massive blaze rapidly burning the Nevsky Market, with huge flames engulfing more than 1,500 square meters of the open-air complex.
In a post on X, Visegrad 24 reported that witnesses have described hearing "multiple" blasts. So far, at least two people have been injured - including a man who leaped from the second floor of the site in a desperate attempt to escape the inferno. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Around 30 firefighters rushed to battle the inferno, with the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) deploying 96 personnel and 26 pieces of equipment.
Thick black smoke from the fire forced local officials to close roads along Iskrovsky Prospekt.
The district prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Several social media users flocked to X to express their shock over the incident.
One wrote: "Explosions on site at St. Petersburg, Russia, up in flames in their market place. Avoid the area. Absolute chaos with several people suffering injuries."

Another one wrote: "St. Petersburg’s market is going up in flames with explosions on site? That’s catastrophic chaos - entire area engulfed, people injured, and no one knows why.
"Markets aren’t supposed to be war zones, yet here we are watching disaster unfold live."
A third user wrote: "That sounds terrifying. A fire of this scale, especially with explosions, is extremely dangerous. It’s lucky that only two people have been reported injured so far, but the situation is still very chaotic.
"Hopefully, authorities can get it under control quickly and prevent further harm."
