US President Donald Trump's speech in the Israeli Knesset was dramatically interrupted by screaming hecklers on Monday. AP reports that his remarks were briefly stopped when two members of the parliament staged a protest, and were subsequently removed from the chamber. Ofer Kassif and Aymen Odeh, members of the joint Hadash-Taal party, are thought to be the men involved. As they were being taken out of the room, other members chanted “Trump! Trump! Trump!”
One of the members is reported to have had held up a small sign saying “Genocide". "Recognise Palestine" was also typed on a piece of paper. The US President commended the parliament's response, telling the chamber: "That was very efficient". This resulted in laughter and applause from those assembled. Speaker Amir Ohana called for order, and could be heard calling the name of Kassif. The Hadash-Taal alliance consists of Hadash, a non-Zionist party that promotes Arab-Jewish cooperation, and Ta'al, an Arab party.
The US President is in Israel following the agreement of a peace deal with Hamas.
All hostages still living have been returned to Israel.
Hamas prisoners are also being released.
A ceasefire became effective last week.
Trump's 20-stage peace plan details that, once all hostages are returned, Hamas members who commit to peaceful co-existence and to decommission their weapons will be given amnesty.
Members of Hamas who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries.
Then, upon acceptance of this agreement, full aid will be immediately sent into the Gaza Strip.
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, said he felt deeply relieved after the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas were released.
“I share the deep feeling of relief as Avinatan Or and other hostages are released today.
“But this is also a stark reminder of the treatment that he has been subject to at the hands of Hamas, and the atrocities that shook the world two years ago.
“Having met his family, I know that no one can truly understand the torture and agony they suffered for two drawn out years and my thoughts are with them. My thoughts are also with the family of Yossi Sharabi, who are still waiting for news.
“I reiterate my thanks for the tireless diplomatic efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey. It is now crucial that we work together to implement President Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, and that will be my focus in Egypt today.
“Commitment to this plan from all parties will be essential to ending the war and building the foundations for a sustainable path to a long-term peace. The UK will support the crucial next stage of talks to ensure the implementation of the peace plan.”
