Italy: Ryanair plane stuck on runway after tyre explodes

The tyres of a Ryanair plane reportedly exploded during landing, leaving the jet and its passengers stuck on the runway.

It is understood that the flight was coming from Barcelona when its tyres popped around 8am local time, L'Eco Di Bergamo reports.

Flights at Bergamo Orio al Serio airport, near Milan, Italy, have been suspended following a major security scare. However, the reason behind the accident is not yet known.

No injuries were reported as passengers exited the aircraft using mobile stairs on the runway. Emergency vehicles from Bergamo and the airport responded immediately.

However, the damage caused to the runway is expected to result in significant delays.

Italian media suggests the airport may reopen by early afternoon. Incoming flights are being diverted to Milan Malpensa and Verona.

Cleanup efforts are underway, and once complete, the aircraft will be removed, allowing the airport to resume operations.

In a statement, the airline told Express.co.uk: “Flight FR846 from Barcelona to Milan Bergamo (1 Oct) experienced a tyre issue upon landing at Milan Bergamo Airport.

"Passengers disembarked normally, and the aircraft was inspected by engineers, who are currently servicing the aircraft so that it can return to service.”

"Departing flights are delayed and arriving flights may be diverted or cancelled until reopened."
