A baby who was in the back of a stolen car has been found safe and well after a major search was launched in Ireland.

The Child Rescue Ireland Alert for the five-month-old was cancelled after she was later found "safe and well" in Dublin city centre.

A spokesperson for the Irish Police, known as the Gardai, said: "We would like to thank the public and media for their assistance. No additional details are available at this time."

It was reported between 1.30pm and 2pm the mother of the baby was standing outside her car in Gardiner Street when a male suspect is said to have hijacked the car with her child still inside.

The car, a Nissan Qashqai, sped off onto Dorsett Street but the child is now said to have been found by the authorities.

According to the The Gardaí, the police in Ireland may issue a CRI Alert where: The child is under 18, there is a reasonable belief that the child was abducted, there is a reasonable belief that there is an immediate and serious risk to the health and wellbeing of the child and when there is enough information for the public to be able to help the Gardaí in finding the child.
