The world seems closer to a global conflict than it has been for decades as war in Europe and rising tensions in the Middle East spark increasing concern among experts.

The war in Ukraine continues to rumble on, with Vladimir Putin and his Kremlin allies repeatedly threatening the use of nuclear weapons over Western intervention in the conflict.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Hezbollah and Israel appear closer to war after a devastating attack on the Lebanese terror group's personnel.

Israel exploded the pagers and then the walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah operatives, killing at least 32 people and injuring thousands more.

This comes amid Israel's ongoing strikes on Gaza following Hamas' October 7 attack last year.

Below is a list of countries that are deemed to be the safest if World War 3 was to erupt.

Antarctica

The first location is Antarctica. Famed for its extreme tourism and barely hospitable icy conditions.

While it is far from where any conflict could break out, its tough conditions would not make it an ideal place to find refuge.

Argentina

Argentina was once a very hostile actor, as seen in the 1980s when the country tried to seize the Falkland Islands from the UK.

Experts say that, in the event of a nuclear bomb being used, Argentina could be one of the safest places on Earth.

This is not only because of how far parts of Argentina are from where nuclear bombs would likely be used, but also because the country has resistant crops like wheat.

Bhutan

Bhutan declared itself neutral after joining the United Nations in 1971.

The country is also landlocked and in a very mountainous region.

Chile

Chile is similarly well-supplied with resistant crops as well as being located far from any simmering conflicts.

It is also one of the most advanced countries in South America.

Fiji

Few countries on earth are as isolated and serene as Fiji. It is 2,700 miles away from the nearest country Australia.

It ranks highly on the Global Peace Index due to its armed forces only having 6,000 personnel.

Greenland

The island is the world's largest and is owned by Denmark.

It is remote, with just 56,000 people living there. For that reason, it is unlikely to be targeted by military action.

Iceland

Iceland regularly ranks highly on the Global Peace Index. Not only is it remote, but it also has a wealth of freshwater reserves, marine resources, and renewable energy sources.

This means it will be less impacted by any supply chain disruption in the event of a global conflict.

Indonesia

Indonesia is another country that typically remains neutral on conflicts.

The country's first president declared in 1948 that the country's foreign policy would be "free and active."

New Zealand

New Zealand is placed second on the Global Peace Index. It rarely intervenes in other nations' conflicts.

South Africa

South Africa has modern infrastructure as well as plentiful sources of food and water.

However, country's government has waded into major conflicts in recent months. It has been accused of being sympathetic to Russia's invasion of Ukraine despite its official neutral stance.

South Africa also brought a case of genocide against Israel in the International Court of Justice.

Switzerland

Switzerland is famed for its commitment to neutrality. It has maintained this stance for around 200 years.

Tuvalu

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Tuvalu is positioned between Hawaii and Australia.

It is isolated and has just a population of 11,000 people, making it an unlikely target.
