Donald Trump issues statement after 'assassination attempt' at golf course

The former President was playing golf near his Mar-a-Lago residence in West Palm Beach, Florida, when the shots were fired.

Shots were fired near Donald Trump while he was playing golf near his home in Florida. The Secret Service opened fire on a "threat" near his golf club.

The former President was unharmed.

The ex-president said in a statement that he is "safe and well" and declared: "Nothing will slow me down." He released a statement saying: "There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!

"I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again. May God bless you."

It was revealed that two Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a suspicious person near the golf course with a firearm. The individual fled the scene in an SUV before being apprehended.

An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump's golf course, one of the officials and a third law enforcement official said.

The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement: "The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe."

Sen. Lindsey Graham took to X moments after the news broke to praise the former president for his stoicism.

“Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”

The former president was playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach when the firing broke out, it was reported. The course is a short distance from his Mar-a-Lago residence.

It comes two months after an assassination attempt on the Republican presidential nominee.

Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks struck the 45th president in the year with a shot he fired during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
