Spanish seaside town popular with British tourists on alert ahead of Euro 2024 final
More police officers will be on duty as England faces Spain in the football final this Sunday.
Calvia council is ramping up security measures in Magalluf with additional police presence as the European Championship final between England and Spain approaches.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 9pm local time (8pm UK time) on Sunday in Berlin, is expected to draw large crowds of fans to the popular tourist town.
The Plaza Illes Pitiüses in Magalluf is a key focus for the heightened security, with over 2,000 England fans anticipated to gather there to watch the game.
Authorities have implemented specific regulations, including the use of only plastic glasses on the streets.
Additionally, police will monitor the volume of the giant television screens to ensure it does not disturb residents and tourists.
Despite the influx of football fans, there have been no significant incidents reported in Magalluf or other parts of the island so far during the tournament.
However, extra officers from the local police and the Guardia Civil have been deployed to maintain order.
As part of the summer reinforcements, the Guardia Civil has increased its presence in Magalluf, with many officers scheduled to be on duty on Sunday.
To accommodate both Spain and England supporters, the Calvia council has also installed a giant TV screen in Son Caliu.
Other councils across the island, including in Palma, are setting up large screens for public viewing, with the biggest being in Plaza de la Reina in Palma.
This strategic move aims to ensure that fans can enjoy the match safely while minimizing disruption to the local community.
