The Met Office has issued a rare warning for thunderstorms later today.

The national forecaster has issued a 10-hour yellow alert between 2pm and 11.59pm on Tuesday, July 9, affecting six UK regions.

The areas affected are Yorkshire & Humber, the West Midlands, Wales, the East Midlands, North West England and South West England.

Experts have predicted that "some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures", while lightning strikes could also cause damage to some buildings.

It added: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water, leading to longer journey times by car and bus."

The Met Office warning reads: " Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out this afternoon and move northwards, slowly dying out during the evening and first part of the night.

"Many places will miss these, but where they do occur, there is the chance of some localised impacts from heavy rain, as well as damage from lightning strikes. 10-20 mm of rain is possible in an hour or so, with some places potentially seeing 30 mm in a few hours."

It comes as separate weather maps show a giant wall of rain sweeping over large parts of the UK later today.

WX Charts forecasted that from 3pm on Tuesday, July 9, large parts of the north of England and Scotland would be covered by the rain, with another large storm making its way over from mainland Europe, set to batter into the south coast of England.
