War fear after mortar attack
TENSIONS are growing on the Georgia border after two mortar shells were fired into the breakaway region of South Ossetia yesterday.
The attack comes almost a year after Georgia and Russia fought a short brutal war over the separatist state.
Georgia denied firing shells and suggested it was a provocation ahead of the anniversary of the war.
The Russian Defence Ministry said it was ready to use force to defend South Ossetia. Russia recognizes the region as independent.
South Ossetia’s information ministry said the shells targeted a military post.
