Ebola outbreak MAPPED: Ebola hits EUORPE? Patient vomits BLOOD in shock Ebola spread
EBOLA was regularly breaking out in central Africa during 2018, when cases multiplied into one of the biggest outbreaks the continent has ever seen. The latest outbreak has now bled into 2019 and one suspected case has spread into Europe.
Ebola: 298 dead in Democratic Republic of Congo
Ebola outbreaks are spreading like wildfire through central Africa, specifically in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This most recent spate of infections stems from a previous outbreak in early 2018, starting from January 30. Before this, regular outbreaks have been monitored since 2013, specifically from the 2013-2016 period when more than 28,000 new cases were diagnosed. Last year, officials were more concerned about the disease’s ability to spread further north and recent claims seem to suggest the virus has broken into Europe.
Has Ebola spread to Europe?
The most recent out-of-Africa case of Ebola has spread forth into northern Europe, where it has settled close to home.
One person is currently being monitored in Sweden, under containment at the Uppsala University Hospital just outside of Stockholm.
They were initially admitted to a hospital just 50 miles west of the city in Enkoping, and later transferred to the Uppsala ward.
The currently unnamed man is being treated in isolation after returning from a trip to Burundi.
Some of their symptoms seemed particularly advanced, including classic Ebola signs like haemorrhagic fever and headaches.
Worryingly, the patient has also been throwing up blood, which is a major indication of Ebola infection.
Health authorities have thus been keen to test the patient, and are currently waiting on laboratory results.
Swedish health authorities said today: ”Test results will likely be ready some time tonight.
“This is still only a suspicion and other diseases are a clear possibility.”
While results are still on the horizon, those who have come in contact with the patient are being kept under observation for symptoms of Ebola.
Traditionally, symptoms of Ebola are slow developing, and can take up to three weeks to fully materialise.
