A man installed a transparent bird feeder on one of his patio doors so his dog and young son could observe the birds, but what happened next caught him off guard. Many homes set up bird feeders in their gardens to provide supplementary nutrition to wildlife. This proves particularly valuable during the bitter winter months and throughout the year, helping to sustain local bird populations and their survival rates, particularly in built-up areas.

The Woodland Trust states: "Not only are birds lovely to watch, but by supplementing their wild diet, you're actually helping to conserve their populations. Food shortages can occur at any time of year for our feathered friends, so hanging a bird feeder in your garden all year round can be a great way of helping them out."

These feeders also enable people to enjoy close-up observation of various bird species, and can reduce the amount of time birds spend searching and foraging for food. They can also assist in controlling unwanted garden pests.

Stefan Sobkowiak, who conducts courses and runs a YouTube channel dedicated to helping people grow food "while attracting wildlife", revealed in one of his videos that certain birds stockpile seeds and consume insects near the feeders, which can help to manage garden pests such as moth larvae.

Popular TikTok account @BeauNoseBones chronicles the adventures of golden retriever Beau and his family. A recent post on the platform shows Beau's owner fixing a transparent plastic bird feeder to their glass patio doors.

Overlaid text on the footage states: "We got a bird feeder so the boys could watch the birds..."

However, the clip then transitions to reveal several shots of squirrels leaping towards the feeder, causing Beau to jump up at the glass door every time and frighten them off. The caption accompanying these clips reads: "not so Beau could repeatedly evict the squirrels..."

The post resonated with TikTok viewers, who were quick to weigh in. One commenter quipped: "Beau said, 'NO SQUIRRELS ALLOWED!! That's for the birdies!'"

Another mirrored this sentiment: "'We specifically said BIRDS'." A third shared: "He's never gonna move from that spot now."

A fourth said: "That's exactly what happened to mine, the squirrels took it over and tore up my screen." Someone else said: "Beau takes security very seriously."

Another viewer noted: "Ha! Our Golden hates the squirrels and constantly chases them out of the feeders and yard!" And another said: "I feel like it's the same squirrel taunting Beau."

One TikTok user added: "Well at least you don't have to worry about the squirrels eating all of the bird feed."
