Austria tests world's first glass mountain top cross
AUSTRIAN tourism officials have put up the world's first mountain top crucifix made entirely of glass.
Traditional mountain top crucifixes are made of wood but it is feared that climate change, environmental pollution and rapidly changing weather conditions will destroy them.
As a result Austria is now testing the first cross made entirely of solid glass and officials hope that it will survive the environmental challenges including record numbers of hurricane force winds.
Local man Roland Steiner who created the 2.50-metre glass cross told the Austrian Times: "Wood rots and even iron will rust eventually – but my cross can withstand winds of up to 330 kilometres per hour."
The cross lies at the top of the 2,339-metre Schartwand mountain.
