Lidl offers Sunday roast for just £1
SUNDAY lunch for cash-strapped cooks just got a lot cheaper with the launch of a roast dinner – for just £1.
The chicken, pork, beef, lamb and turkey meals are on sale at supermarket discount chain Lidl.
And the ready-made frozen packets are already proving a big hit with struggling families hit by the credit crunch.
Some even admit it could spell the end to hours spent peeling vegetables and slaving over a hot stove cooking the traditional weekly roast.
The new single portion dinners – which are produced in the UK – can be microwaved in under 10 minutes. They include a serving of meat plus potatoes, carrots, peas or sprouts, Yorkshire pudding, sausage, stuffing, gravy and even apple sauce.
The German chain said the vegetables count towards one of the “five a day” portions recommended by GPs. Lidl is selling the roast dinners under its Newgate own-brand range. They are reduced by 49p to a bargain £1 at selected UK stores.
But bosses said it may roll out the budget price across the UK if the meals are a huge hit. Lidl spokeswoman Clare Norman said yesterday: “Our Newgate roast dinners are not only delicious, they will give you a hearty dinner and one of your five-a-day."
"They make a quick and easy nutritious meal at a price our customers have come to expect. That is great news for your taste-buds and your wallet. People found it refreshing to get a Sunday dinner for £1 and it is little effort to just put it in the oven instead of peeling veg and cleaning chicken.”
The dinners are on sale for £1 at Lidl shops in the Midlands, South-west and South Wales. But in Scotland, London, Manchester and the North-east they cost £1.49.
