At least 5.6 million people have been ordered to leave their homes in the biggest evacuation in US history ahead of Hurricane Irma’s landfall devastation.
The mass evacuation had led to huge traffic jams along Florida’s northbound highways as Hurricane Irma’s 160mph winds head directly towards the state.
However, a late shift in Hurricane Irma’s projected path means that even places previously considered safe are now under threat.

Speaking to Fox & Friends this morning, reporter Jillian Mele commented on the chaos unfolding on the highways of Florida.
She said: “The beaches are empty and the waves are picking up. All the highways out of here are jam-packed.
“People from Miami were going West, but now people out West are trying to get out of there after the storm path changed.
“Gas is also hard to come by so people are abandoning their cars.”
