A yellow weather warning has been issued in the UK as heavy rain is set to descend in hours according to new weather maps.

Britain is bracing for more rain as the Met Office issues a new weather warning, with forecasters predicting a 200-mile downpour across many parts of the country.

It seems that summer is officially behind us, with parts of England experiencing heavy downpours while northern Scotland contends with freezing temperatures.

The Met Office also forecasts winds of up to 60mph.

Southern England and the Midlands have already seen over 250 percent of the average September rainfall, marking a dramatic shift in the season.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly, said: “Sunday will bring a return to wet and windy weather across the southern half of the UK.

WX Charts weather forecasters predict that heavy rain begin Saturday night - and will be worse in south west England and Wales.

"A warning for rain has been issued for southwestern England and south Wales from 1600 on Sunday through to Monday morning. Within the warning area 20-30mm of rain is expected quite widely, with up to 50-80mm possible over the higher ground of Dartmoor, south Wales and the Dorset Downs.

“A Yellow warning for wind has also been issued from 0900 to midnight on Sunday. The area covers the far southwest of England and western Wales.

"Gusts of 50-55mph are likely within the Yellow warning area, up to 60mph is possible in the most exposed coasts and areas of higher ground."

Met Office 3-5 day weather forecast: 

Today:

It will be a bright day for many, with sunny spells across the UK. However, northern and western regions can expect scattered showers, with longer periods of rain possible in northwest Scotland. Temperatures will feel chilly, staying a bit below the late September average.

Tonight:

Showers are set to continue in the northwest through the evening and overnight, while the rest of the UK remains dry with clear skies. Toward the end of the night, cloud cover will increase in the southwest.

Sunday:

Low pressure will bring wet and windy conditions to western areas throughout the day, while northern and eastern regions remain mostly dry, though clouds will increase. Temperatures will stay slightly below average.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Monday will remain unsettled with heavy rain and brisk winds, keeping temperatures cool. Conditions will start to brighten from the west as we move through Tuesday and into Wednesday.
