Met Office confirms temperatures to soar by 10C in hours - new maps

While Friday night won't be as cold as Thursday some places will see near-freezing temperatures, according to the Met Office.

UK weather: Outbreaks of rain for some and dry elsewhere

Temperatures are set to rise up to 10C in hours after the mercury plummets to single digits overnight, the Met Office has suggested.

Parts of southern Britain could see just 8C by 5am on Saturday (September 14) but by 3pm on the same day the mercury is forecast to reach 18-19C.

The Met Office said while Friday night won't be as cold as Thursday (September 12), some places will see near-freezing temperatures, particularly under clearer skies in southeast England.

Scotland and Northern Ireland look set for outbreaks of rain, with gales in the far northwest by dawn, according to the Met Office.

It will be a chilly start to Saturday in southern England, but over the course of the day temperatures will recover to the near average for the time of year.

Jason Kelly, a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "The cold Arctic air we have been experiencing will be replaced with warmer westerlies over the weekend.

"High pressure will bring fine weather to the south, but there is an area of low pressure to the northwest, which will push some weather fronts across Scotland and Northern Ireland, bringing rain and thicker cloud.

"It will also be windy across Northern Scotland, especially on Saturday."

The Met Office said on Sunday (September 15) that front will move southeast, bringing cloud and patchy rain to parts of northern England and Wales, with perhaps some heavier bursts on western hills.

There will be clear and sunny spells either side of the front, with dry weather in the south but some showers in the north. The Met Office expects temperatures in the high teens, perhaps even 20C.

Next week looks set to be dry and warmer for many as a ridge of high pressure takes over.

David Oliver, a Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "In the wake of the front on Sunday, high pressure then builds, bringing fine and dry conditions to most parts of the UK for much of next week.

"If any rain develops, it is expected to be confined to the extreme northwest of Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

"There is a risk of some fog patches overnight and temperatures continue to increase, with many places a little above average by mid-week."
