Shocking new weather maps have revealed that the UK will be plunged into freezing temperatures in just weeks.

According to the latest predictions the big freeze will hit Britain on September 13 across the Scottish Highlands.

But the chilly weather won’t be limited to Scotland - with areas around Carlisle struggling to reach temperatures over 3C and areas around Leeds dropping to 5C.

Meanwhile, the south of the country isn’t predicted to be balmy either - reaching 10C in London and the surrounding areas on the same day.

The Met Office has weighed in on the predictions saying their forecasts don’t have anything suggesting 0C temperatures in September currently.

But a Met Office spokesperson said that forecasters have already recorded temperatures below 0C this summer.

The freezing weather was recorded in the Highlands of Scotland in mid June, Powys in Wales on June 12, and Aberdeenshire and Inverness, also Scotland earlier the same month.

The spokesperson added: “Looking forward, the lowest temperature we have in our forecast period is 2C in rural Scotland tonight and on Saturday night.

“We don’t have anything suggesting temperatures below 0C at the moment.”

Weather expert Jim Dale, senior meteorologist and founder of British Weather Services, thinks that a drop to 0C in September is “pretty unusual”.

He said: “This is one is for the sheltered glens of Scotland. Pretty unusual for the time of year, clear skies and a chilly northerly breeze the culprit, but still a long way off to yet be confirmed.”

The Met Office issues a long range weather forecast which currently covers from Friday, September 13 until Friday, September 27 and predicts “perhaps slightly cooler than average” temperatures for the month.

It said: “Moving through then beyond mid-September confidence for the continuation of settled weather falls.

“Instead, it is more likely that there will be a return to a mixture of weather types, with spells of wet weather interspersed with drier periods.

“By this period it is expected temperatures will have returned to near average, perhaps slightly cooler than average in the north or northwest at times.”

The predicted drop in the temperature will come days after the country is blasted by a heatwave that could send mercury levels soaring to as high as 30C for three consecutive days.
