Met Office verdict as Britain to be hotter than Sahara with 33C blast - hottest areas

Certain areas of the country are likely to experience far hotter temperatures than others this weekend, forecasters predict.

The UK is set to sizzle this weekend, with temperatures predicted to soar higher than the Sahara Desert.

Weather maps have turned blistering red as some areas of the country could bake in temperatures as hot as 33C in an intense spell of hot weather.

Londoners can expect the highest temperatures, with Sunday and Monday forecasted to reach a scorching 33C.

Meanwhile, Manchester will see highs of 26C, Glasgow 22C, and Belfast 21C.

However, the Met Office has warned that the heatwave may be short-lived, with severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall also possible across parts of the UK over the weekend.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicky Maxey said: "The hot spell is short-lived but quite intense."

She added: "Temperatures are due to peak on Monday and rapidly return to average on Tuesday and Wednesday."

Storm Debby, which wreaked havoc in the southern US earlier this week, could also bring strong winds to our shores.

Friday will start off wet and cloudy in the south and east of England, but drier weather and sunny spells are expected to spread across much of the country as the day progresses and temperatures rise.

A mass of cloud and outbreaks of rain will continue moving eastwards and northwards this morning.

Following the weekend of intense hot weather, the Met Office warns that thunderstorms and heavy rain could be expereinced in "portions of Wales, northern England, Northern Ireland and southern and eastern Scotland".

Today:

Morning cloud and sporadic rain across the south of England will swiftly clear, making way for a bright and sunny day. Elsewhere, expect sunny intervals and scattered showers, most frequent in the north.

Tonight:

The northwest will continue to experience showers this evening. Other areas will enjoy clear spells, although overnight cloud and sporadic rain will move into western regions.

The north will remain breezy.

Saturday:

As the day unfolds, England and Wales will see a gradual lift and break in the cloud and patchy rain, although some southern areas may remain cloudy. Further north, conditions will be brighter with scattered showers.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Expect sunny intervals on Sunday and Monday, but be prepared for the increasing likelihood of heavy showers and thunderstorms. It will be hot and humid in the southeast.

However, from Tuesday onwards, conditions are set to become generally more unsettled and cooler.
