New weather maps forecast a sweltering heatwave will hit the UK in a matter of days, with several towns and cities expected to bask in barbecue conditions.

WXCharts' forecast analysis indicates that London and the southeast are most likely to experience the highest temperatures, potentially reaching a blistering 34C.

This wave of warm weather is being propelled by high pressure originating from the eastern Atlantic over the Azores, before it surges northwards over Portugal and Spain, arriving in Britain around Monday, August 12.

According to the latest maps, locations such as Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich, Colchester, Ashford, Dover, Hastings, Bedford, Swindon, and Ipswich could all see temperatures nearing the 34C mark.

Elsewhere, temperatures may cool slightly, but the mercury could still hover around 30C as far north as Birmingham and as far west as Cardiff and Bristol.

UK weather: Met Office forecasts hot and humid conditions

The weather phenomenon driving this hot spell is known as an Azores High, a large semi-permanent area of high pressure typically located over the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,500 miles southwest of the UK.

Brits could experience the hottest day of the year on or around August 12, the Met Office predicts.

Their latest forecast read: "Following a warm night for many on Sunday, Monday is expected to be warm across many areas, especially in England and Wales."

The Met Office continued: "In the southeast, it may feel hot in some places. Temperatures are anticipated to be higher than on Sunday, possibly reaching the low to mid-thirties. Heavy showers may also occur within this warm air."

However, the forecaster warned: "Meanwhile, cloud and rain in the northwest will steadily move eastward, sweeping away the warm air overnight into Tuesday, resulting in a return to fresher weather."

Turning dry for many with sunnier and clearer spells into the evening.

Most places are dry with clouds increasing from the west later. Scattered showers in the northwest, heavy at times, but easing. Outbreaks of rain into the far southwest around dawn.

Cloud and rain moving in from the west through the morning. Turning heavier in the west through the afternoon. Rain turns patchy by the evening but remains cloudy.

A bit more settled in the south on Friday with showers in the north. Heavy rain on Saturday across central areas but drier and brighter in the south on Sunday.
