The sweltering heat comes as Europe's scorching summer shows no signs of ending, with heatwave warnings in effect from Spain to Germany.

The hot weather has triggered droughts and wildfires across the Mediterranean, and it is expected to persist throughout August and beyond in some areas.

Extreme heat currently causes over 175,000 deaths annually in Europe, a figure expected to rise significantly, according to a report released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency⁤ has issued a warning for exceptionally high temperatures, which could exceed 43C in the southeast of the country.

This⁢ extreme heat phenomenon, affecting several European regions, is expected to persist for‌ some time.

In particular, the eastern⁢ coasts, the south, and ⁤the ‌center of Spain will face⁣ the peak of this heatwave, with temperatures in some areas already reaching record levels.

It’s not only southern Europe facing the heat: the German Weather Service DWD has issued a warning as parts of the country face 35C-plus temperatures.

Campaign groups have warned the country is ill-prepared for heatwaves, with Frankfurt’s Senckenberg Society for Nature Research urging the development of early warning systems as the threat of wildfires ramps up.
