Britons are finally enjoying some balmy summer weather, but temperatures look set to plunge once again in days, a new map suggests.

The latest UK weather maps from WXCHARTS indicate Brits should make the most of Friday's 31C blast before a steep drop in temperatures by Tuesday.

London and Birmingham could see temperatures drop to lows of between 10C and 11C on the morning of July 23, with some areas of Wales forecast for as low as 6C.

Meanwhile, the mercury could drop to as low as 4C and 5C in central and western Scotland.

It comes as the Met Office gave a brutal verdict on the August weather forecast in its latest long-range predictions - painting a grim picture for Britons hoping for a late summer heatwave.

In its latest forecast, the agency has warned of "wetter than average" conditions next month, with separate weather maps, also from WXCHARTS, revealing a giant wall of rain looming over UK at the start of next month.

The Met Office's long-range weather forecast for the period between Friday, August 2 and Friday, August 16, reads: "Through this period, there remains a slightly increased chance of more settled spells of weather developing at times, particularly in the south.

"However, there is still a substantial chance of other weather types too, with more changeable periods also likely," it said, adding: "Through the period as a whole, drier than average conditions are more likely than wetter than average.

"Warmer than average conditions are also weakly favoured overall, with a slightly enhanced likelihood of short-lived hot spells."

Meanwhile, for the rest of the month, experts have forecasted that a "more widespread spell of dry and sunny weather may develop" throughout southern parts of the UK next week.

But despite the blast of sun Britons are currently seeing, it also warns that "showers and occasional spells of more persistent rain are likely to affect all regions at times" in its outlook for the 10-day period between next Tuesday, July 23 and Thursday, August 1.

It's not all bad news, however, as top meteorologist and weather expert Jim Dale told Express.co.uk earlier today that an extended heatwave is "well overdue".

The British Weather Services founder said: "A prolonged heatwave is overdue, because we haven’t had one this summer. It’s always been short-lived."

He added: "Expectations would be that we would see a week somewhere in August that does deliver a hot weather scenario.

"When that will be is difficult to determine as it’s still far away", he added, as climate change has made forecasts increasingly difficult due to unexpected weather shifts.

Meanwhile, parts of Europe continue to sizzle in the scorching Meditteranean sun, with holidaymakers warned to take precautions while travelling.
