Europe is expected to experience long periods of burning hot temperatures in the coming weeks, with thermometers set to hit well into the low 40s in Spain and Portugal.

As weather maps for the two beloved holiday hotspots remain a deep red throughout - an indication of temperatures hitting above 30C - some areas can be seen coloured in white to indicate where residents and tourists can expect to see 43C to 44C.

Most of the Costa del Sol will experience temperatures between 31C and 41C on Thursday, July 4. Just a little further north, near Seville, the heat is set to reach 43C.

Extremadura and the eastern part of Andalucia will take the brunt of the scorching conditions. In the Gulf of Cadiz, with the cities of Huelva, San Fernando, and Cadiz, temperatures are expected to range between 41C and 43C.

Later in the day, Murcia will also see the heat intensify, with a hotter climate extending along the coast up to Alicante and Valencia.

The southern part of the Alentejo region of Portugal and the Algarve will also see thermometers spike to a maximum of 43C.

Europe has been grappling with unprecedented high temperatures this year, leading to severe droughts and devastating wildfires.

From the beginning of June, officials in Costa Del Sol have imposed water restrictions that will last until September 30.

Due to water scarcity, these new rules have led to the closure of showers at all beaches along the coast.

Coastal municipalities in Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz have declared they will be dismantling all beach showers as a response to the severe drought conditions.

Spain ultimately issued a yellow weather warning for Valle del Tajo, Villuercas y Montánchez, Barros y Serena, Sur de Badajoz, Vegas del Guadiana, Aracena, Andévalo y Condado, Litoral de Huelva, Campiña Gaditana, Vega del Segura, Campiña Gaditana, Menorca and Ampurdán.

Portugal and Greece have also cautioned tourists about the soaring temperatures as the two countries issued both yellow and orange weather warnings in place until at least the end of the week.

The Dodecanese Islands, which include tourist favourites such as Rhodes and Kos, were placed under an orange warning.

Holidaymakers have been advised to ensure they drink lots of fluids, wear lighter clothes and have a hand-held fan with them.
