Met Office issues new 20-hour weather warning hours after Storm Isha barrels into UK
The forecaster has issued a new 20-hour weather warning which comes into place hours after Storm Isha is set to pummel the UK with heavy gusts and rain.
The Met Office has issued a new 20-hour weather warning which will come into effect just hours after Storm Isha is set to hammer into Britain.
The forecaster has issued a yellow alert for a number of UK regions between Tuesday, January 23 at 4pm and 12 noon the following day.
The warnings have been issued for 11 regions, including Highlands and Eilean Siar, Northern Ireland, Yorkshire and Humber, Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and Borders, North East England, Grampian, the East Midlands, Central, Tayside and Fife, Strathclyde, Orkney and Shetland and North West England.
The Met Office warns there will be "a slight chance of some damage to buildings", a chance "power cuts may occur" as well as a "small chance of injuries and danger to life".
It has been an extremely chilly week as the cold weather continues over the next few days. The Met Office revealed the extremes of yesterday’s weather - in Tyndrum, Scotland temperatures plummeted to a baltic -9.1C, almost 18C colder than the highest temperature across the UK.
Tonight, gale winds will strengthen, with possible "severe gales" for exposed western coasts. As Storm Isha approaches this evening, there will be "pulses of heavy rain".
The weather experts at the Met Office said: "Gusts will frequently reach 50-60 mph, perhaps 70 mph at times in a few locations and, along exposed coastal stretches 80 mph is possible at times."
In terms of what to expect, the forecaster said there is a "good chance" of power cuts and potential for mobile phone coverage to struggle.
There will be longer journey times, cancellations are likely on public transport, and ferry and air services may be affected suddenly.
