ITALY weather forecasters have predicted temperatures will rise to unbearable levels this week, as they lay down red alerts for Italian cities. Which cities are on red alert?

Italy is the next country to succumb to the severe heatwave currently making its way over western Europe. An incoming African plume has sent temperatures soaring in France and Spain, where highs are reaching 40C. One Spanish newscaster warned “hell is coming” as maps showed a foreboding blood-red blot over most of western Europe. The Italian Ministry of Health has issued a chain of urgent weather alerts.
Which cities are under red alert?
The Italian Ministry of Health issued a total of 16 red alerts this week, six active from today.
The red “level three” alerts warn of adverse reactions to high temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to reach 39C in cities such as Brescia in the north of the country, and 38C in central Italy around Rome.

- Florence
- Perugia
- Rieti
- Rome

The red alert warns people in the scope of high temperatures to regularly consult city bulletins and stay out of the Sun from 11am to 6pm.

The UK will see the effects of high temperatures in the next few days, with a sweltering weekend ahead.
Temperatures expected to exceed 31C in London, breaking temperature records for the year so far.
