Arctic air will sweep over the northern Plains and upper Midwest on Thursday, following days of deadly snowfall. The air will then spread through the Great Lakes and Northeast by the end of the week. This means temperatures could plummet even lower to 20F (-6C) amid reports fish have frozen at Niagara Falls.
What is the weather forecast?
By the end of the week, temperates are forecast to be 35 degrees colder than average for late January.
Areas that could be affected include Minneapolis and Des Moines, as well as Chicago and Milwaukee.
The National Oceanic and Atmospherc Administration (NOAA)’s 14 day temperature outlook says parts of the central and eastern stated should see below-average temperatures from January 30 to February 5.
Marc Chenard, a forecaster at the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said wind speeds of up to 30 to 40 miles per hour (48 to 64 kph) could also be on the way.
He said: "This is definitely dangerous, life-and-death kind of weather happening.
"Minnesota and Wisconsin will see temperatures in the negative 20s.
“Boston will be just 3F (-16C) this morning, with wind chills of minus 12 or more.”
"New York City and DC will be in that same range, maybe hitting the teens later today. It'll be record or near-record cold."
The further cold weather comes after a foot (30cm) of snow and sleet dropped across northeastern parts of the USA at the weekend.
Areas affected included New York City, Boston and northern New England.
The USA is also recovering from Storm Harper, which killed at least six people.
Around two feet of life-threatening snow around parts of Midwest and Northeast USA fell.
The storm was created by a large low pressure system near the Pacific Northwest coast.
The energy from the system blasted California with snow and heavy rain on January 16 and 17.
Harper brought warm southerly air that also caused some minor flooding in Delaware, New Jersey and Massachusetts January 20.
