A married man who spent the first two decades of his life oblivious to his biological origins shocked his family by abandoning his wife to pursue a sexual relationship with the mother who had relinquished him at birth.

Kim West was just 19 and studying in California when she gave birth to her son Ben. Battling both financial hardship and mental strain, she found herself unable to care for him alone, and consequently arranged his adoption after a week before returning to her home in the UK.

For over three decades, they remained out of contact, though everything shifted in 2013.

Ben, who was by then married and residing in Colorado, chose to locate his biological parents, ultimately finding Kim and posting her a letter.

What started as tentative emails and telephone conversations rapidly intensified, and by 2014, they had organised to meet in person.

It proved a reunion that would descend into something scarcely anyone could fathom, reports the Mirror.

According to both parties, the bond was immediate and powerful, and within days of their encounter, their relationship turned sexual.

The consequences arrived almost straight away.

Ben subsequently confessed that following his involvement with his mother, he informed his wife Victoria of something that left her devastated - he could no longer be intimate with her unless he imagined she was his mother.

Kim, looking back on those initial days, characterised the atmosphere in the household as tense. She said Victoria was courteous yet detached, and that jealousy rapidly emerged.

"(Victoria) was welcoming, yet I couldn't warm to her," Kim said. "I felt a growing sense of competition and when Ben touched her I felt jealous."

She alleged Victoria grew progressively uneasy with the amount of time Ben was dedicating to his biological mother.

"She would constantly call him when we were together," Kim said. "Eventually, he admitted she was giving him grief about spending time with me. 'She calls you mummy girlfriend,' he said."

Merely days after the affair commenced, Ben revealed everything to his wife. Shortly afterwards, he departed the marriage and relocated to live with Kim in Michigan.

When their relationship entered the public domain, it triggered widespread condemnation. Under Michigan law, consensual incest between adults constitutes a grave criminal offence carrying potential imprisonment and compulsory registration as sex offenders.

Despite the criticism, the pair dismissed the incest label. They instead characterised their connection as "Genetic Sexual Attraction", citing a disputed theory not recognised by most psychologists which suggests that close relatives meeting for the first time as adults experience powerful attraction because they lacked early-life bonding.
