Woman killed by runaway van
A WOMAN was crushed to death and a man received serious injuries yesterday when the driver of a delivery van apparently left the handbrake off.
The driver, 51, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the van ‘hurtled’ down Pudding Lane opposite London’s busy Monument Tube station.
The woman, believed to be in her late 20s, was crushed between the white van and a wall. She died at the scene.
The man who had been run over was said to be in his mid 20s. He was taken to hospital.
A witness, Sophie McCleod, said she was crossing nearby Lower Thames Street with some work colleagues when she heard a “crash and a woman screaming about three or four times”.
She added: “There was blood all over the place. It was horrendous.
“It looked as if the driver had gone off to do a delivery.”
