Remainers will do 'LASTING DAMAGE to UK democracy' by blocking Brexit, rages MP
BREXITEER Owen Paterson issued a stark warning to MPs seeking to frustrate the Brexit process, claiming their interference could cause "lasting damage" to British democracy.
Paterson: Anti-Brexit MPs will do lasting damage to democracy
Owen Paterson called out members of the House of Commons who don't support the Government's Brexit strategy.
Ardent Brexiteers have suggested pro-Remain MPs are seeking to frustrate the Brexit process by supporting major amendments to the European Union Withdrawal Bill.
Addressing Theresa May during PMQs, Mr Paterson said: "63 per cent of members of this house represents constituencies that voted Leave.
"Does the PM agree that should those members not support her, by voting for her programme of taking back control, by leaving the single market the customs union and the ECJ, they will be denying the democratic vote of constituents and do lasting damage to our democracy?"
Brexit news: Owen Paterson warned attempts to remain in the EU would make "lasting damage" to UK
Cabinet ministers have previously threatened MPs that if the final Brexit deal is rejected in the Commons, the UK would simply leave the EU with no agreement.
The PM agreed with Mr Paterson, urging MPs to deliver on the choice of the British voters and to show "integrity".
Mrs May said: "He's absolutely right: we're delivering on the vote of British people to leave the EU.
"It's a matter of the integrity of politicians to have once given the choice to the British population to deliver on that choice."
PMQ’s: May grills Corbyn over ‘BROKEN’ promises
They will be denying the democratic vote of constituents and do lasting damage to our democracy
Tory Remainer MP Nicky Morgan has joined forces with Labour's former minister David Miliband and the former Liberal Democrat deputy prime minister Nick Clegg in a new plot to stop a hard Brexit.
The trio claimed they are “alarmed" by Prime Minister Theresa May’s negotiating strategy with the EU and argued that Britain is being "held to ransom" by Tories pushing for hard Brexit.
Ms Morgan said: "If we are not going to get this deep and comprehensive free trade agreement the Prime Minister has talked about and David Davis has talked about, then the EEA has to be a sensible way to go forward and the Lords are right to put it back on the agenda.
"I certainly will be looking at it - I think it’s something I will be likely to support - and I think it provides a big answer to the City of London in terms of the worries.”
