Pizza takeaway orders SOAR thanks to online technology and Brexit
BRITAIN is a growing nation of pizza lovers, according to figures out yesterday. End-of-year results from Domino’s Pizza soared as cash-strapped diners order in food rather than eat out.
Takeaway pizza sales have soared
Sales are believed to be driven by online order technology – and boss David Wild said the firm also benefited from the Brexit referendum vote.
He said: “The first thing you cut down on is eating out when you have less money to spend.”
Domino’s cited strong sales through sponsorship of TV shows The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing and major sports events such as Floyd Mayweather beating Conor McGregor in boxing.
The pound’s collapse has taken its toll on the casual eating-out sector, with restaurant chains such as Byron, Prezzo and Jamie’s Italian shutting large numbers of outlets.
Domino’s system sales rose 15 per cent to £1.18billion in 2017, helping underlying profit increase 10.2 per cent to £96.2million.
As a result, revenue rose 29.3 per cent to £474.6million, although pre-tax profits nudged down from £82.5 to £81.2million after it was hit by exceptional costs.
In the UK and Ireland, system revenue rose 9.2 per cent to £1.1billion.
