The woman was blasted with a shotgun as she sat in her Range Rover outside her home in Newport, Shropshire.
A 45-year-old man suffering gun shot wounds was arrested at a nearby farm shortly afterwards.
Police were yesterday guarding him at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he is recovering.
Neighbours have told police they heard Mrs Hooper’s 14-year-old daughter yelling: “My mum’s been shot, she’s dead.”

Paramedics rushed to the scene after the shooting late on Friday.
But they could do nothing to save Mrs Hooper and she was declared dead at the scene.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the woman died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Friends said she had been the target of a harassment campaign and had recently moved into the area to escape a stalker.
