A jury will delve into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man in a police station car park next year, following an announcement at Derby Coroner's Court.

Assistant coroner Sabyta Kaushal revealed during a brief session on Tuesday that 23 witnesses are set to testify in the four-week inquest into Marius Ciolac's death, with proceedings commencing on January 21.

Marius Ciolac, aged 35, succumbed to a gunshot wound to his abdomen after a confrontation at Ascot Drive police station in Derby on October 7, 2022, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC detailed that officers attempted to subdue Mr Ciolac, who was wielding a knife and vandalising the police station entrance, using various means including a stun grenade, baton round, and Taser before resorting to a lethal firearm discharge at approximately 10:03 am.

The Romanian national, with no relatives in the UK, was rushed to hospital from his Osmaston Road residence but did not survive the morning. Investigators recovered three knives from the scene, as reported by the police watchdog.

Expressing the urgency felt by the family, Ms Kaushal stated to those present at the hearing: "The family are anxious to move the case on, we are looking at a case that happened near the end of 2022. They would like to progress matters."

Mr Ciolac's family joined the pre-inquest hearing remotely with the assistance of a Romanian interpreter and were informed that "core evidence" including CCTV and body-worn camera footage has been disclosed to the interested parties involved in the case.
