Bridlington lollipop lady finally passes driving test at 70 years old
IT WAS sixth time lucky for Penelope Rogers who finally fulfilled a “lifetime ambition” by passing her driving test at the age of 70.
Penelope Rogers was too nervous for her first tests in the 1960's and kept failing, until now
She had given up driving lessons 50 years ago after failing her test five times but restarted two years ago when her husband Michael died.
“When I passed I was in shock, I was so happy,” said Mrs Rogers, from Bridlington, East Yorks.
“It’s been a lifelong ambition of mine and so many people thought I’d never be able to learn now.
“I think it was one of the best days of my life hearing that I’d passed.”
Unlike her seven siblings, who all passed their driving tests in the 1960s, Mrs Rogers said she felt too nervous when she took hers at that time and failed five times.

“I didn’t like driving when I first started,” she admitted.
“But it’s so different now, there was nowhere near as much traffic then.”
She paid for the lessons by working as a lollipop lady. Her daughter Serena Rogers said: “It’s a fantastic achievement, overcoming grief and a big change of life to pursue a dream to drive. She deserves recognition.
“The driving test instructor said mum was the oldest person she had taken out and passed their test.”
