Commons speaker John Bercow has called for the tribute, which is usually reserved for MPs who die in office, to be extended to the policeman killed in the Westminster terror attack in March.
Mr Bercow said the fallen police officer would “always have a very special and perhaps unique hold” on MPs’ affections, as the idea of a shield was discussed in the House of Commons before Parliament was dissolved on Wednesday.
PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death trying to stop Khalid Masood from entering Parliament buildings after he mowed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge on March 22.
MPs say he should be honoured alongside Jo Cox, who was shot dead by far-right terrorist Thomas Mair last June, and MPs killed by the IRA.

Labour MP Chris Bryant argued a House of Commons shield would be “wholly appropriate”.
He added: “He wasn’t a Member of Parliament but he was one of us, and he was our shield and defender.”
