TRAVELLERS who invaded a seaside car park went unpunished, despite illegally parking caravans for four days over the Easter holidays and leaving piles of litter in their wake.

But the 50-strong group of vehicles were moved on without penalties after being treated as an illegal encampment.

A Canterbury City Council spokesman said: "Our focus was on ending this illegal action as soon as possible to ensure the least amount of disruption to the town's residents and visitors.
"Our enforcement officers were quickly on site to kickstart the legal process.
"It is undoubtedly the case that a difficult situation that could have gone on for much longer was brought to a swift conclusion."

Angry local resident Linda Richard Leahy said: “It’s a car park for cars, not caravans.
"Many holiday makers own caravans too, and pay to stay in a designated camp site - not hitch up in a public car park en masse and prevent everyone else using it.
"No one - including holiday makers - has the right to use them as overnight stops."
