Brass bands and scout groups among beneficiaries of Co-op charity scheme
Thousands of grass roots charities are sharing millions of pounds from a fund set up by retail giant the Co-op.
Approximately 4,000 charities will benefit from the £9 million scheme
Around 4,000 charities, ranging from Scout groups, walking clubs and brass bands to those providing a social service such as helping with bereavement, will benefit from the £9 million scheme.
Every time one of the Co-op's 4.3 million members buys an own brand product or service, they receive a 5% reward, with a further 1% going to local charities.
Walking clubs, scout groups and brass bands are among the beneficiaries
Chief membership officer Rufus Olins said: “Many of the 4,000 good causes we are supporting operate on a shoestring, so the money they will receive from the Co-op in the next few days will be vital.”
A fifth of the charities to benefit from the first round of the Co-op's membership scheme support young people.
The average amount going to a charity will be more than £2,200.
