Officers were called in at 11 o'clock this morning
Inspector Heathershaw added: “I would like to thank those affected for their patience.
“Officers will be in attendance for some time until we establish exactly what the item is.
“Further details will be released when available.”
Bomb disposal units arrived at 3pm
Ballater SNP councillor Geva Blackett said: "For families involved in the area it is quite dramatic - yet again they are having to evacuate their houses.
"I hope everything turns out alright for them."
