'A RIDICULOUS notion' LBC caller condemns plan to allow Brits to retain EU citizenship
A NEW CAMPAIGN urging Theresa May to allow Britons to retain EU citizenship has been slammed as a “remainer delaying tactic”.
LBC caller angered by remoaner's attempts to delay Brexit
The European Movement UK is arguing against Britons being stripped of their EU citizenship rights when the UK leaves the European Union.
It plans to call on the Prime Minister to allow Britons to retain their citizenship after Brexit.
Matthew Fulton, the group’s chief executive, said: “Sixteen million people voted to remain citizens of the EU, and as such we’re asking that this Government accepts it has a mandate to represent the wishes of those who want to remain in Europe by letting them keep their EU citizenship as a key request in the Brexit negotiations.
Labour MEP Richard Corbett added: “Stripping citizenship from millions of residents against their will is unprecedented in a modern democracy.”
The potential scheme was condemned by Bruce, a south London resident who rang into LBC.
LBC host Clive Bull was told by a caller the scheme was nothing more than a delaying tactic
He told show host Clive Bull: “It is a quite ridiculous notion.
“It just appears to be another delaying tactic by the remainers and I would not take it up.”
Bruce said he had previously lived and worked overseas on the continent before launching into an angry speech against the EU.
The LBC caller continued: “I disagree with the whole premise of the EU and I see it as a failing union.
“It seems to me that it is in terminal decline and why would I want to be a part of that club.
The proposal was put forward by Luxembourg MEP Charles Goerens
It is a quite ridiculous notion
“Furthermore, albeit it was a little more difficult, people could still work in Europe and Europeans could still come here, before the EU.
“I just think it is a delaying tactic and a bit of a red herring.”
The proposed scheme was put forward by Luxembourg MEP Charles Goerens.
In the amendment he suggests: “European associate citizenship for those who feel and wish to be part of the European project but are nationals of a former Member State.”
Ukip MEP Bill Etheridge has described the proposals as an attempt to “make EU citizenship something when it is a political fabrication.”
LBC caller says she is fearful of racist attacks since Brexit
He told Express.co.uk: “The EU referendum was a victory for Brexit because people voted for primacy of British sovereignty and a demand to control migration.
"This amendment is sticking two fingers up to the majority of voters in this country by saying the EU can control our borders even after Brexit and British citizenship can be superseded.
"It demonstrates the futility of a reasoned debate with the European Parliament led by arch Federalist Verhoftstadt and a need for this government to press on with Brexit."
