The 12-week-old black and tortoiseshell kittens have been named Wotsit, Pringle, Dorito and Quaver by RSPCA staff.
They were spotted in the early hours of Saturday morning at the side of Station Road between Llanishen and Lisvane in Cardiff.
RSPCA inspector Sophie Daniels said: "These poor kittens must have been so frightened, being left alone in a cardboard box in the dark.
"We don't know how long they were there for, but thankfully they were spotted and a kind passer-by took them home.

"The kittens - one male and three females - have had a vet check and they are in all good health. They are really friendly and are really lovely kittens.

"They have not been microchipped so at the moment we can't identify their owner. Inside the cardboard box there was a red blanket."
The cats are currently at the RSPCA's Merthyr Tydfil clinic.
If an owner is not found, the kittens will be made available for rehoming.
The RSPCA has recently warned that animals were "coming in every day" to its rescue centres as the UK cat population reached what it called a "crisis point".
