REVEALED: Thousands of luxury cars seized from uninsured drivers or who had no licence
THOUSANDS of luxury cars have been seized by police this year because the drivers are uninsured or have no licence, it was revealed yesterday.
Thousands of luxury cars have been seized by police this year
They included Bentleys, Ferraris, Porsches and a Rolls Royce worth £265,000.
Topping of the list of the most confiscated luxury car brand in England and Wales are BMWs and Audis.
But officers also seized six Lamborghinis, four Maseratis and an Aston Martin.
The figures were revealed by insurance giant Churchill who called for stiffer penalties for drivers caught with no insurance or an invalid licence.
Churchill says there are more than a million uninsured drivers on the roads with most of them in London.
We need an urgent examination of the penalties for uninsured motoring
So far this year, police have seized 22,594 cars due to no insurance or invalid licence.
Auctioning seized vehicles has raised £1.4 million with an extra £270,000 coming from scrap.
This was the result of the drivers being uninsured or having no licence
Steve Barrett, head of car insurance at Churchill, said: “Everyday, law-abiding motorists are paying out for their car insurance but the harsh truth is that they also have to pay for the million drivers on our roads who choose to drive without insurance. (correct)
“To know that a contingent of these uninsured motorists are driving around in luxury cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, believing that their bank balance elevates them above the law, is maddeningly unjust and selfish beyond measure.
Insurance companies have called for stiffer penalties for those drivers caught
Mr Barrett added: “We need an urgent examination of the penalties for uninsured motoring, introducing sentences that are a real deterrent and that will keep these irresponsible motorists off the road.
“The penalties should be far higher and money generated from increased fines should be pumped back in to enabling the police to catch more uninsured drivers.”
