The former Labour MP – who was in Manhattan when a bomb rocked the New York city district on Saturday – has just returned from touring America to help promote business in post-Brexit London.
Mr Khan said: "It is a reality I'm afraid that London, New York, other major cities around the world have got to be prepared for these sorts of things.
"That means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities, it means the security services being ready, but also it means exchanging ideas and best practice."
The former Labour MP claimed to have had a "sleepless" night after the bomb hit Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood, which injured 31 people.
Another device was also found in Manhattan, but failed to detonate.

Mr Khan has been criticised for apparently contradicting himself after claiming "it’s important for those of us who are foreigners to stay out of the US elections" before voicing his support for Hillary Clinton.

He said: ”I hope that the best candidate wins and I hope she does win with a stomping majority".
The London Mayor also took a thinly-veiled swipe at Donald Trump’s promise to erect a wall along the US-Mexico border, saying he wants to build "bridges rather than walls”.
