Media mogul Richard Desmond revealed in his best-selling autobiography The Real Deal that the businessman was way down the pecking order.
Mr Desmond wrote: "Out of the blue I was approached to host a new TV show called The Apprentice, taking the role for the British version that Donald Trump had in the American original.
"I called my publicist and asked him what he thought.
"He asked what I wanted to be when I grew up - a TV star or a businessman?
"I replied that when I grow up I want to be Rupert Murdoch, not Simon Cowell."

Mr Desmond called Philip Green but he too was not interested and suggested Sugar.
Mr Desmond added: "So the call was made and Alan got the gig."

Yesterday it was revealed that Lord Sugar was appointed the Government's enterprise tsar.
Flushed with excitement about his new job, Lord Sugar went on Newsnight to pontificate about the European Union debate.
He said leaving the EU would lead to a "disaster" for the UK, adding: "We have to stay in. I don't know what these Brexit people are thinking."
