Bolshoy Kamen lies in the south of Primorsky Krai which is off the Sea of Japan where humpback whales are common between February and April.
Whales are regularly washed up on beaches when they accidentally stray into shallow waters, often in search of food or because of extreme weather conditions, but they are usually rescued if wildlife experts are able to keep them alive until they are pulled out to sea at high tide.
