Motor racing legend John Surtees made a CBE at Buckingham Palace
MOTOR racing legend John Surtees, 82, the only man to win world titles on both two wheels and four, was made a CBE at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

He was 500cc motorcycle champion in 1956 then switched to Formula One in 1960, winning the F1 title with Ferrari in 1964.
He received his award from the Duke of Cambridge for services to motorsports.

Mr Surtees, who has a corner at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent named in his honour, said: “In everything in life there has to be something driving one, so if you can get people emotionally involved in something that is the best driving force, in my opinion.

“I was emotionally involved, I would have done it even if I hadn’t got paid if I could have done.”

Mr Surtees became the 500cc motorcycle world champion in 1956 then switched to Formula One in 1960 where he was an instant success.
He went on to win the F1 world championship with Ferrari in 1964.

Former England rugby star Mark Cueto, 36, and super-bantamweight boxing champion Carl Frampton, 29, were both made MBEs at the ceremony.
