An Islamic society president has resigned after homophobic tweets were found on his feed
One of the tweets on Muhammed Patel's feed read: "Homosexuality is a disease of the heart and the mind."
Hours later the account is also reported to have posted a message reading: “Can you fag lovers get out of my mentions pls, thanks. (sic)”
He has now stepped down from running the Islamic society at Goldsmiths University of London after a series of homophobic tweets were revealed.
In other tweets Mr Patel reportedly referred to "fag lovers" and "stupid" gay pride marches.
Another tweet reportedly read: “This Asifa [Lahore, a Muslim drag queen] has always p’d me off. How can you be trying to justify why it’s OK to be Muslim and gay.”
The tweets from the @mopey96 account have since been deleted.

Homosexuality is a disease of the heart and the mind
Mr Patel's withdrawal from Goldsmiths' Islamic Society comes just weeks after Muslim students repeatedly disrupted a lecture on blasphemy given by a human rights activist - with one reportedly making a death threat.
The tweets were brought to Goldsmiths Student Union's (SU) attention after members of the university's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) society screengrabbed and shared pictures of the tweets reportedly sent by Mr Patel's account.
His resignation came after a "meeting was called to discuss a motion of no confidence" in light of "recent allegations", according to a statement on the Islamic society's Facebook page.
The statement said: "In light of recent allegations attributed to, Muhammed Patel, a meeting was called to discuss a motion of no confidence. Soon after Muhammad tendered his resignation and it was accepted by the committee.
Goldsmiths' welfare and diversity officer Bahar Mustafa has also attracted controversy
"Hate speech of any kind has no place in our society."
Goldsmiths SU, who published the statement on its website, appeared to welcome Mr Patel's resignation, saying: "Equality, diversity and respect for others within the Goldsmiths community are core values at Goldsmiths SU and we welcome this news."
An acting president will now serve as head of the Islamic Society until the end of the academic year.
The university Islamic society was involved in a row after disrupting a lecture on blasphemy
The series of homophobic tweets is the latest in a string of scandals to hit Goldsmiths this year.
A few weeks ago Islamic society members allegedly disrupted the lecture by controversial speaker Maryam Namazie who was addressing the Atheist, Secularist and Humanist Society, claiming their "safe place" had been violated and calling Ms Namazie a "notorious islamophobe".

The university's welfare and diversity officer Bahar Mustafa was also embroiled in a race row earlier this year after allegedly tweeting with the hashtag "kill all white men" and banning white people and men from a meeting.
She was reported to police but no charges were brought against her.
