Chief Inspector Paul Cahill, MBE, was allegedly found by colleagues slumped at the wheel of his car near a railway station.
The Metropolitan Police officer's car was searched and class A methylamphetamine was discovered, a court was told.
Class B mephedrone as well as a class C sedative called Zopiclone was also found, Westminster magistrates court heard.
Cahill, 43, appeared in the dock for a brief hearing before the case was adjourned to next month when he is likely to enter pleas to drug possession charges.
The officer, a former chairman of the Gay Police Association, has been on sick leave for six months.
District Judge Emma Arbuthnot granted the adjournment at the request of Robert Morris, defending.
She told Cahill: "Get this matter dealt with and move on with your life. That's my advice."
