Muhammad Ali is in hospital with pneumonia
The former three-time heavyweight champion, who has Parkinson's disease, is said to be in a stable condition.
Ali's spokesman, Bob Gunnell said: "He has a mild case of pneumonia and the prognosis is good," adding that the 72-year-old's stay in hospital would be brief.
Mr Gunnell declined to give other details about Ali's condition, but asked that the privacy of his family be respected.
Ali retired from boxing in 1981 and was diagnosed with Parkinson's three years later.
Since then he has devoted his time to charitable and humanitarian work.
Ali was last seen in public in September to attend a ceremony in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky for the Muhammed Ali Humanitarian Awards.
