28 doctors that committed suicide during probe had addictions
A TOTAL of 28 doctors committed suicide while under investigation over their fitness to practise between 2005 and 2013, a study found.
The GMC report found many doctors had substance abuse issues
The report, commissioned by the General Medical Council (GMC), found many of the doctors were addicted to drugs or alcohol or had mental health problems.
A leading GP said she had seen a fourfold increase in patients at her service for sick doctors.
A culture of complaint was “hardwiring cruelty into the NHS”, increasing pressure on vulnerable doctors, nurses and managers, she said.
The report by consultant Sarndrah Horsfall found that the GMC had made “significant improvements” in the support it offered to doctors under investigation.
